Friends of Sugar Creek Members in Attendance: Zach Cain, Matt Williams, Doug Calisch, Lali Hess, Marc Hudson, Jim Suren Annual Meeting • Friends of Sugar Creek will hold their annual meeting on April 21 at 6 pm in the basement of the Crawfordsville Public Library. Meeting is open to the public and will be especially promoted to our membership base. • The Board discussed a proposal to find a speaker for the event to create an added incentive to attend. Former Board member Raoul Moore will be contacted first. Wabash biology professor Ertic Wetzel is also an option. Jim Suren will contact Raoul. • The board also discussed the need to review the finances of the organization at the meeting. If Doug Miller is unable to attend, Lali Hess will give this short presentation. • The other primary item of business at the annual meeting is election/appointment of board members. o After some discussion, the following nominations were made for the executive board: o This lineup will require a change in the by-laws to allow Zach, Matt, and Doug to exceed the term limits at their positions. Zach and Matt were adamant about taking a break from executive positions after the upcoming term. The board expressed hope that new at-large board members recruited for the upcoming year will eventually fill their vacancies. o There are currently six vacancies for at-large board positions. Nathan distributed a draft letter to send nominees for these positions. Potential nominees are Katie Linn (Lali), Paul Vasquez (Doug), Christie Byun (Doug), Beth Swift (Marc), Mark Davidson (Zach), Bill Richardson (Zach), and Wendy Feller (Nate). These nominees will be mailed a letter, at which point the directors in parentheses will follow up with a phone call. • The board also discussed mailing a “homecoming” invitation to former board members to encourage their attendance at the meeting. • The board will honor Cortney Mycroft and Phil Michal for their service if they can attend. Bachner Reserve Dedication • Promotional actions for the dedication are proceeding well. 100 posters advertising the event have been distributed on campus and to board members for posting around town. Don Bickel wrote a section of his JR column about the event. Outreach events and presentations have also allowed the board to spread the word (League of Women Voters, Lawn and Garden Show, Wabash presentations) • Rough schedules is as follows: • Wabash will have 3 vans to transport students and other individuals • The Wabash Environmental Concerns Committee is sending a formal all-campus email about Mike and the event. This text will be used (hopefully) for a JR article. • NICHES has ordered memorial water bottles. FSC will split costs if possible to have name included. Fundraising Letter • Nathan discussed quotes for the printing. The board decided to have Instant Copy in Lafayette print the letter. Angie will pick up the set when convenient Spring Cleanup • Spring cleanup will be held on May 16 meeting at the Elston Softball Diamonds. If enough volunteers show, additional sites may be targeted. • Glenn Summers from Friends of Turkey Run is coordinating a cleanup in the Turkey Run park area on the same day. Lawn and Garden Show • L&G show went well. ~1400 attendees. 8-9 new member sign-ups and 1 donation. Flyers with upcoming events were distributed. Misc. • Wabash Econ Professor Christie Byun has received funding for an economic impact study on Sugar Creek. She will have 1 student intern assisting with the work. o Nathan also gave a presentation to Christie’s class and took them canoeing. • Nathan and Zach attended the Friends of Big Pine meeting in Williamsport. They discussed the history of FSC and gave advice on starting a similar organization. Linda Schmidt from IDEM was also there. |
